Since I am still relatively new to the paleo lifestyle, I continually scour the Internet for information and resources on the topic. One recent quest led to me to discover Thrive Market. This online store offers a unique take on those warehouse membership clubs with which we’re all familiar. Essentially, for an annual membership of $59.95 (which comes out to only $5 per month) you gain access to over 2500 top-selling natural and organic products which are sold at 25-50% below retail prices. As a professional purchasing agent by day, saving money is in my blood, so getting great products below retail is what first peaked my interest in this company. I also really enjoy the convenience of online shopping and direct to my door delivery; but what made me become a customer was the fact that they are a socially conscious company.
According to their website, “Every year, 49 million Americans experience food insecurity while 80 percent of low-income families resort to buying food they know isn’t healthy just to make ends meet. Meanwhile, more than 23 million Americans today still live in “food deserts” – low-income neighborhoods where healthy natural food is nowhere to be seen” (1). This is why Thrive Market’s primary social mission is to provide access to healthy products to everyone. How do they do that? Well, for every paid member who joins Thrive Market, a free membership will be given to a low-income family. That offer is not for a limited time – it’s forever. It’s part of their mission. In addition to offering free memberships, Thrive Market understands the importance of caring for our environment. They are committed to sustainability and they prove it by using recycled packaging, working with eco-friendly suppliers, and being 100% carbon neutral.
Sure, I can purchase these products from other companies, both locally and online. Will I find them at a better price? Perhaps, but when I did some comparison shopping, I have to say Thrive’s prices were most often the lowest around. (I found it amusing the famous big box store that starts with “Wal” and touts being a low-price leader, sells Coconut Secret Aminos at a price that is 63% higher than Thrive Market.) But saving money is not my only motivating factor here. As someone who has been purchasing all natural household and body products for more than 20 years from another company with similar values, buying from socially conscious companies is extremely important to me. How important? Enough that I joined as a customer and placed my first order with Thrive last week.
Even shopping on their site is a great experience. With their layout, you can shop for products by many different values, grouped by certifications, health & ingredients, and environmental & social. Here’s just a few:
- BPA free
- Certified gluten-free
- Certified Kosher
- Certified organic

- Locally sourced
- Low glycemic
- Made in the USA
- Non-GMO project verified

All in all, there are 69 values listed which translates into 69 different ways you can shop for products which support your values. Pretty cool huh? Another cool feature is they’re offering a 15% discount on your first order, and free shipping for orders over $49.
Even cooler is their customer service. I placed my order on the 18th and it shipped on the 19th. It arrived yesterday and was very well packaged. I ordered several items in glass containers, and everything arrived intact. In fact, check out their packaging.
Yes, I ordered more than two items. The box was filled. I was just so excited to see my order that I tore into the box; and unwrapped most of the items before I remembered to take a photograph. 🙂
I also wrote to customer care on 2/18 suggesting a couple of other products I would love to see them carry. I received the below reply on the following morning:
Thanks so much for shopping with Thrive and taking the time to offer your feedback! The Paleo Wraps from Julian Bakery are amazing and one of my personal favorites. I have never tried Nicks Sticks but they look great as well. Thank you for these awesome recommendations. I will submit your request to our purchasing team for review as they continue to add new products and brands to our site. We’re adding a few hundred new products to the site each month and are constantly looking to build upon our catalog to carry more of our members’ favorite products. Please let us know if you have further suggestions! Thanks again for shopping with Thrive Market. By the way please keep me posted on how you enjoy your new purchases.
